What Are The Binge Drinking Statistics?

Binge drinking is when men have more than 5 drinks in one sitting and girls have more than four drinks in one sitting. The binge drinking statistics are scary.

Binge drinking is most common in high school and college aged people. In fact nearly 51% of all college males have binged drank and nearly 40% of all female students have done it also. All in all, nearly 42% of all college students have reported that they binge drink.

Statistics also show that on nearly any college campus, 70% of the student body participates in binge drinking. That is more than half of the student body and out of that 70% nearly half of them binge more than once a week. Nearly half of the college binge drinkers have five or more alcohol-related problems on campus. They may be caught by campus security, or they may partake in vandalism and other destructive activities.

It is common to see that most binge drinkers are students under the age of 21 and a member of a fraternity or a sorority. Most college binge drinkers state that the reason they drink is due to peer pressure, social status, and academic stress. However almost half of all binge drinkers do so just so they can get drunk.

Alcohol-related crashes in the United States cost the public an estimated $114.3 billion in 2000, including $51.1 billion in monetary costs and an estimated $63.2 billion in quality of life losses. People other than the drinking driver paid $71.6 billion of the alcohol-related crash bill, which is 63 percent of the total cost of these crashes.

The awful truth though is that nearly 1400 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from binge drinking. The NIAAA estimates that there are nearly 500,000 injuries, 600,000 assaults, and nearly 40,000 cases of unprotected sex as a result of binge drinking.

On top of that nearly 2.1 million college binge drinkers drive drunk. Imagine that. nearly 2.1 million of our college students are out there driving drunk.

Many individuals, for whatever reason, continue to drink while they drive.  Due to the fact that many individuals have done this for so long without ever getting involved in an accident or ever receiving a DUI, they probably wonder how alcohol can “really” affect their driving skills.

When it comes to their academics, nearly 1/3 of binge drinkers fall behind in their school work due to drinking. Think your money is being well spend? How is this statistic for you, college students combined spend nearly 5.5 billion dollars on alcohol a year and a individual student usually spends close to $500 a year on alcohol.

Some evidence suggests that people experiencing mental illness-related difficulties (such as anxiety, depression, perfectionism, thought disorder and a host of other conditions) may use drugs or alcohol in an attempt to manage their symptoms; a situation called '"elf medication."

The statistics for high school students are even more troublesome. Almost 89% of high school senior have admitted to trying alcohol at least once, and out of that 89% nearly 30% go on to be binge drinkers. Binge drinking in high school is usually a strong indicator of who will binge drink in college. Alcohol is the third leading cause of death among people between the ages of 15-24.

For every dollar spent to purchase alcoholic beverages, Americans incur about two dollars in social and health care costs. Averaged across the population, that's about $1000 per year for every U.S. adult, whether or not they themselves drink. For those who are directly affected by their own problem drinking or that of a family member, the costs are much higher.

These statistics as scary as they are are real numbers. Most of the college binge drinkers go on to develop alcoholism years later. Most of us send our children off to college to educate them so they can go on to lead successive lives. Sending them off to college to turn them into alcoholics is the last thing that we want but unfortunately it is what is happening.

Denial is automatic; it is not usually a matter of deliberate lying or willful deception. Most dependent people do not know what is true or false concerning their drinking or drug use and its consequences. They are blinded to the fact that their view of the situation does not conform to reality. The denial system distorts their perception and impairs their judgment so they become self-deluded and incapable of accurate self-awareness.
